Frequently Asked Dental Questions – Lubbock, TX

Educating Our Patients One Question at a Time

Do you have questions about replacing missing teeth, your at-home oral hygiene routine, or anything else having to do with your oral health? Our team is happy to help! Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions that we receive from our patients. If you don’t see the information you’re looking for, feel free to call our dental office and ask.

How often should I switch out my toothbrush?

It’s recommended that you change out either the head of your electric toothbrush or get a new manual toothbrush once every three months, whenever you notice the bristles are beginning to fray, or after you get sick. This will keep your gums from becoming damaged and prevent bacteria accumulation on your toothbrush.

I’m scared of the dentist. Can you help?

Yes! Our team has commonly helped patients with dental anxiety feel more comfortable when they come in for necessary treatments or their regular checkups and cleanings. We offer nitrous oxide sedation and try to make our environment feel as welcoming and non-clinical as possible. Since we’re a stand-alone dental office, it feels less like a dental office and more like a home. We also have tall ceilings and windows throughout the building to help it feel more airy and less cramped.

Do you provide children’s dentistry?

Dr. Shively and our team are happy to treat patients of all ages, including children! We focus on building a strong, collaborative relationship with parents to help a child maintain excellent oral health throughout their life. If you would like to schedule an appointment for your child, please call our dental office!

Does Dr. Shively do oral surgery?

Yes! Dr. Shively is highly trained and well-versed in oral surgery. During his time in the Army, he was trained to do tooth extractions and remove impacted wisdom teeth. He’s trained to place dental implants as well.

What should I do if I have a dental emergency?

If your smile has sustained damage or you have a severe oral health problem that’s causing you pain, contact our dental office immediately. We offer same-day emergency appointments and work quickly to get our patients out of pain.

Are dental implants the best option to replace missing teeth?

Dental implants are often considered one of the best treatment options for missing teeth, but not everyone is a good candidate. To find out if you are, we welcome you to visit our dental office for a consultation!

What can I do to help my child feel comfortable visiting the dentist?

Dr. Shively offers “happy visits” to help nervous children get acquainted with their dentist early on and make sure that they don’t have any traumatic experiences. Our team focuses on making these visits fun and enjoyable for children, allowing them to ask questions and see the dental office. We’ll take a quick look in their mouth to give them a small taste of what their actual dental checkup will feel like as well.

Is it really necessary to visit the dentist every six months?

Yes! Even if you’re diligent about brushing and flossing your teeth at home, it’s crucial that you visit us for your bi-annual checkups and cleanings. We’ll examine your mouth and make sure that no small, lingering oral health problems have a chance to become serious and cause permanent damage to your mouth. Plus, you’ll get to leave our dental office with a nice, refreshed smile!
